Thursday, September 8th, 2010 was Major League Baseball’s 9th annual “Roberto Clemente Day.” Clemente was a superb and talented Hall of Fame outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates until his death in 1972, and he is considered one of the finest all-around examples of excellence in baseball history. Although his exploits of hitting, fielding, base-running and throwing will always be remembered, what makes him immortal are his deeds as a humanitarian.
“If you have a chance to accomplish something that will make things better for people coming behind you and you don’t do that, you are wasting your time on this Earth,” he said. Clemente cared as much about making a contribution off the field, as he did about playing to his potential on the baseball fields of his dreams. He is a hero and a role model for everyone who plays the game; he is a standard of greatness by which every man can take measure.
