Research

Respected, acclaimed and accomplished strength coach Joe Kenn of Boise State, Utah, Arizona State and Louisville said, “I am the research.” Meaning, he does not recommend, teach, or espouse anything to his athletes that he has not first tried himself. He does not rely on the opinions or judgments or beliefs of anyone else to prove the essence and value of what he teaches.

He uses himself as the test pilot, and if a concept flies, he passes it along. If a concept crashes, Kenn has saved his athlete from failure.

The world of hitting and its teaching is populated with all kinds of coaches, advisors and opinion-holders. They range from the sincere and honest practitioner who loves the game to the charlatan and faker interested only in a quick buck. Knowledge may be extracted and gleaned from each, even if from a “don’t do what they do” perspective.

The key is to use the Kenn filter. Research everything yourself. Be merciless. Tear apart, dig into, and rip asunder every piece of advice and every philosophy in order to prove its worth. Recognize that, to a point, everything works – depending on the time, the place, the circumstance, and your receptivity and willingness to learn. Be willing to try almost anything in order to become a great hitter, and make certain to accept nothing at face value. Prove it for yourself! Do your research and become great!
