Monster Potential?

The company Monster.com hosts the largest and most popular job search website on the internet. Their recent television commercial begins with an image of a large and powerful white stork soaring high above the clouds and passing over a majestic mountain. The stork carries a large cloth bundle in his beak, an homage to the common and widespread popular culture image of a stork delivering a baby to its mother.

The stork passes a barren plain then lands in a vast desert. The stork is careful and gentle and places the bundle on the ground. The bundle opens and reveals a tiny, cooing human infant. The stork spreads his broad wings and shields the baby from the bright rays of the sun.

The stork, still carrying the bundled baby, flies low over the crashing waves of an ocean and then glides around snow-covered rock peaks. The stork lands and places the baby against a rock wall. The stork is approached by 3 vicious and aggressive wolves who are in obvious pursuit of the baby. The stork defends the baby by biting and snapping at the predators and flapping his wings until the pack scatters. The stork flies through swirling winds and harsh lightning and pouring rain, then clouds open to reveal a residential neighborhood. The stork swoops down to a home and places the baby on the porch. The stork watches as the mother and father open the bundle and peer at the face of the happy baby, whose yawn …

Segues into a scene of the baby, now a young man, slouching behind a cluttered desk in a nondescript dark and dreary office. The man is bored and tired and performs mundane tasks in a listless manner as rain patters outside his office window. The stork appears on the ledge. The man looks with a start and stares, breathless. The stork gazes with questioning and sad eyes. With an effort, the stork looks downward and flies away as the phrase “Are you reaching your potential?” appears on-screen.

Well, are you?
