A new school year is upon us, and with it is a chance to be a great student. Mike Newlin was a skilled if unsung NBA player from 1971-1982 known for his intelligence, his dedication, and his preparation.

In elementary, junior high, and high school, Newlin brought home every book, from every class, every night, and studied from each whether he had an assignment or not. He set a minimum goal of 4 hours’ study per night, and achieved it.

He attended the University of Utah on a basketball scholarship, and as an English major. On his first day of class, he went to each professor and said, “I am an ‘A’ student. What do I have to do to get an ‘A’?” He set his sights high, and then did whatever he could to achieve his lofty goals. He became a Rhodes Scholar finalist and graduated with honors.

Today, Newlin continues to study and learn on a daily basis. His range of subjects, interests, and hobbies is so varied and in-depth that some call him a genius. Newlin’s response? “Genius is perseverance in disguise.” Become a genius, the Mike Newlin way.
