Senior and star quarterback Reggie Garrett of powerhouse West Orange Stark High School in Texas completed a touchdown pass during the 2nd quarter of a game on Friday, September 17, 2010. The personable young man was known for his skill as a football player, and more important for his qualities as a leader of young men on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. He was a humble, giving, caring young man who dreamed of being an architect and was a standout academic achiever who always set a great example for his peers. The players of area youth football teams idolized him and he repaid their attention and friendship in kind. He was a rare blend of competitive athlete and genuine strong character and was destined for greatness.
After the TD pass, Garrett collapsed on the sidelines. He was taken to a local hospital, and died a short time thereafter. His teammates finished the game with heavy hearts and a void in their souls. Their leader was gone, and his shoes will never be filled.
This is a sad story of extremes. One version is melancholy and focuses on the unfulfilled potential of a young man who possessed the gumption and wherewithal to change the world. The other version is inspirational. Nothing in life is guaranteed - not the next moment or the next quarter or the next game or the next time. Approach every play, whether in football or in life, as the last play. Do everything as if it will be your last act. Invest your full greatness into all you do, and like Reggie Garrett, you will always be remembered as a great man.
