Television network HBO just released a brief, special commercial to promote their boxing division. “I Still Have a Soul” has no dialogue and no frills. It depicts a homeless man who cobbles together enough loose change in order to begin training at a run-down, old-school boxing gym. The man devotes his entire existence to boxing and does whatever it takes to fund that pursuit and keep his dream alive.
This commercial is not a cutesy, feel good, skipping through the daisy field, I’m OK and you’re OK, rose-colored look at a man dabbling at something. This is a hard, dark, grim glance at the difficult life of a man who seizes an opportunity and is relentless in pursuit of his objective. It is visceral and blunt and accurate in its portrayal of a man possessed. You may not be a boxer but you will find ample inspiration for greatness within the 2 minutes and 25 seconds. Watch, learn, live.
