“There can be only one.” This is the underlying premise and tag-line of the feature film series, television show, and novel Highlander. The fantasy-action storyline, spanning centuries, involves a small race of skilled and near-immortal warriors who fight amongst themselves for the honor of being the last survivor. A warrior can only be killed by another warrior, and when a warrior is killed his knowledge and skill is transmuted in its entirety to his killer. Kill or be killed; kill and grow stronger; only one warrior survives and gains “The Prize.”
You are engaged in a similar battle, whether you realize it or not. The battle is unceasing and occurs without pause. Your battle is waged between the forces of the righteous and the mighty, versus the forces of the devious and the weak. It is a battle for your soul and for your identity.
You must fight the forces of sloth and weakness and complacency and doubt and confusion and fear. These are your near-immortal enemies whom you must slay in order to gain the prize. Your prize is the accomplishment of your true nature, the unveiling of your inner essence that makes you unique amongst all the billions of humans since the dawn of man. And the implications of your battle’s outcome are immense.
If you are meant to pitch a baseball or cure a disease or build a car, and don’t, then the prize will never be yours. If you allow fear and doubt and weakness and their allies to win, you kill your dream of being special. You hurt yourself. You hurt your friends. You hurt your community. You hurt your Creator, and everything He’s created or will create, when you fail to win the battle to become the greatest “you” possible. Fight the battle, and fight it to win.
There can be only one. And that one is you!
