Flashlight

An attribute of many a great hitter is the ability to keep his hands (for lack of a simpler term) “inside the ball” when he swings. Meaning, the batter does not move his hands far away from his body when he swings.  He does not reach away from his body in an outward and far-sweeping motion toward the ball. He keeps his hands close to his body and swings such that the bat barrel moves into the hitting zone, and not his hands.

An easy way to visualize this: imagine a long-handled flashlight is used as a bat. Hold the flashlight at the end near the light. Begin a swing. If you swing with your hands inside the ball you’ll notice that the first motion of your hands shines the beam of light toward the pitcher. In contrast, if you swing out or away the beam of light shines toward your body.

Shine the light of truth on your swing. Keep your hands close to your body and inside the baseball. Light up the pitcher and light up the scoreboard!
