In the desolate and magnificent wilderness of North Carolina lives a unique man. Eustace Conway had a childhood dream to live a primitive existence much like that of the mid-19th century American Indian. His dream expanded to include plans for exposing and educating as many people as possible to his self-reliant, independent style of living. His 1000-acre Turtle Island Preserve is an oasis of simplicity in a sea of complexity. The preserve is a return to simple times, when man ate only that which he killed or harvested and man existed by the sweat of his brow and the craft of his hand.
Conway’s teachings provide a bridge between the modern world and the natural, harmonious yet subsistence life of a past world. His way of life, he believes, nurtures the soul and forces a man to grow in accordance with the challenge of surviving in a harsh and unforgiving world. He interacts with the modern world only insofar as it helps to spread his doctrines and beliefs to an ever-widening circle of adherents. He is a complex man replete with the faults and frailties afflicting all men, and he lives a simple life in pursuit of his dream.
