Do Less to Do More

Minister, author and lecturer Henry Ward Beecher was asked how he could accomplish so much in so little time, in comparison to his peers. He said, “I don’t do more, but less than other people. They do all their work 3 times. Once in anticipation, once in actuality, once in rumination. I do mine in actuality alone, so I end up doing things just once.”

In the parlance of Nike’s advertising blitz, “Just do it.” Enough with the endless contemplation, take action and get something accomplished. And when it’s over, move on to the next action without reflection. Rock band the Pink Fairies sang, “Don’t think about it / Well, all you’ve got to do is, do it / Well, don’t talk about it / All you do is do it, do it” in their song “Do It” almost 20 years before a giant shoe company galvanized a nation into action.

Do less; do more. Do it, and be great.
