Burn Notice

Part of becoming a man of greatness is being able to extract gems of wisdom from all you encounter. Each experience in your life is an opportunity to learn. For example, you can watch television without focus and let the sounds and images mesmerize, hypnotize and lull you into a wakeful sleep. Or, you can observe with critical, aware, focused and concentrated eyes and ears and derive benefit from even the most mundane program.

Fortunately, Burn Notice on the USA Network is entertaining enough to capture the attention of even the drowsiest, most slothful viewer. And, life lessons abound. A common theme of the show about a spy working to restore his good name, reputation and employment with the organization that “burned” or cast him aside without warning, is the importance of remaining true to certain core values in the midst of horrendous circumstances. The lead character has core values that include loyalty, friendship, and benevolence. These are tested each episode, and the character wages war within in order to cling to these bedrock principles that are his greatest assets and, often, his links to sanity and living a just life of purpose.

It is tempting to abandon your principles and your moral compass when times are tough. Often, your desired end goal seems to justify the means you use to achieve it. However, erosion of the inner guiding principles that comprise your character is a treacherous path that, once trod, becomes habitual and you may soon find yourself adrift and confused without a moral anchor.

Stay true to yourself and your important beliefs, especially when circumstances seem to indicate that is not an option. Life, and certain people, will stop at nothing in the effort to have you forget, forego, compromise or ignore what you consider important in lieu of what seems expedient or necessary. Resist the temptation to abandon your principles. Serve notice that you refuse to ever burn your core values and beliefs - in the words of the show, “you’re not going anywhere.”
