Believe

Every physical action has a genesis in mental activity. “What you can conceive, and believe, you can achieve,” said philosopher James Allen. Meaning, a correct thought in your brain creates a belief that becomes the pathway to correct action by your body. I.e., “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re right,” said businessman Henry Ford.

For example, baseball Hall of Famer Joe Morgan contends that a batter in a slump can practice all he wants, and at some point additional practice won’t make any difference. It’s only when the player decides, no matter what the circumstance, he will get a hit that the slump ends. To Morgan, the mind believes and the body abides.

Religious and political leader Mahatma Gandhi said, “Men often become what they believe themselves to be. If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn’t have it in the beginning.”

Parents and coaches, take heed: inject this quality of belief into a young player before he ever swings a bat. Reinforce the belief with appropriate practice, and you’ll see the thought turn into fact.

Ted Williams said, “Hitting is 50% above the shoulders.” Use the mind and compel the body to be great. Believe first, then act, then achieve. Be a believer and become a great hitter.
