It is presumed by many that Christopher Columbus discovered the “New World” of North America (excluding Greenland) in 1492. Legend portends that he was preceded in the discovery by almost 500 years by Norseman Leif Ericson, who led his band of Viking warriors to the shores of North America in the 1001 to 1003 time frame. Ericson was accompanied by his half-sister Freydis Eiriksdottir (like Leif, she was also an offspring of Viking leader and legend Erik the Red), among others. When the Vikings landed on the shores of the new land, they discovered that they were not the first inhabitants. Indigenous peoples, who become known as American Indians, inhabited the land and took umbrage at the arrival of the Vikings. The Indians decided to evict the erstwhile invaders.
The Indians ambushed the Viking party encampment. The attack was so sudden and so violent that the majority of the Vikings, startled and taken aback, retreated and left just a small group of their countrymen, and one weaponless woman, to defend the site. Viking lore indicates that Eriksdottir stood strong and tall in the midst of the axe, spear, and tomahawk-wielding Indians. She was pregnant, she was upset, and she decided not to run away. She chided her fellow Vikings to stand and fight, to no avail. So she grabbed a sword and went berserk, swinging and flailing and screaming all the while. She smashed the sword against her chest and dared the Indians to attack her. They refused, and retreated, defeated by a lone woman.
When all odds are against you, defy conventional wisdom and attack. It may not appear wise or prudent or reasonable, but it is effective. Learn from a fierce Viking, and face your challenges head-on, with crazed aggression and full-on intensity.
